Welcome — First-Time Startup (Step-by-step)
Starting up a Trezor device is a small sequence of checks and choices that makes the difference between secure custody and avoidable risk. This guide walks you through the first-time experience: unboxing verification, firmware validation, creating and safeguarding your recovery seed, and best practices for daily use. Treat this as your quick reference during setup and keep it available until you finish the first successful transaction.
Before you begin
Unpack on clean surface. Only connect your Trezor to the official Trezor Suite (or trusted open-source alternatives you already verified). Never accept unsolicited setup instructions via email, chat, or social media. If the packaging or hologram looks tampered with, pause and contact official support before connecting the device.
Step 1 — Power & connect
- Connect the device with the supplied cable to your computer or phone.
- Allow the device to boot and display the welcome screen; follow the device prompts.
Step 2 — Firmware check
The device will prompt to verify or install firmware. Always install official firmware updates shown in Trezor Suite — firmware integrity prevents malicious implants. Confirm the fingerprint on-screen against the Suite if prompted.
Step 3 — Create a new wallet
Choose “Create new wallet” on the device. The Trezor will generate your recovery seed (typically 12, 18 or 24 words depending on model and settings). Write these words down on the supplied card or a durable steel backup — never take a photo, never store the seed in cloud notes.
Step 4 — Secure your seed
- Write every word legibly and in order.
- Store copies in separate, geographically-distinct secure locations (e.g., a safe deposit box + home safe).
- Consider using a steel plate backup for fire/water resistance.
Step 5 — Set a PIN and optional passphrase
Create a strong PIN on the device; enable the passphrase only if you understand how it creates an alternate wallet (it is an advanced feature — losing the passphrase = losing access to those funds).
Final checks & first transaction
Open Trezor Suite, confirm the device is recognized, and send a small test transaction to validate the flow. Always confirm destination addresses on the Trezor screen — never rely solely on the host computer.
Tip: Practice recovery using a test wallet and a new device to ensure your seed backup works before moving large amounts of value.
